Drills, Drills and More Drills

Drills are a great way to get the player to feel what you are trying to get them to feel. If done properly, they can benefit the players immensely. If done improperly, they are reinforcing bad habits.

“Practice doesn’t make perfect, practice makes permanent.”

When explaining the drill, go through it slowly at first. Give the player a chance to get the motion of it down and gradually bring it up to full speed. Make sure as a coach that your players understand why they are doing each drill, the proper way to perform it, and the benefit they will receive from it. Next, make sure someone is constantly watching them do the drill, so they keep doing it properly.

Vary your drills according to skill level and don’t get too complicated. Some of the best drills may be the simplest, even for the older players. Incorporating a couple widgets and several movements may be more than your kids can comprehend.
